Breaking Barriers: Women in Martial Arts

Coach Mira SandovalMarch 3, 2026

Half our black belts are women — and it started with one nervous beginner in 2009. This is how our women's squad trains, wins and welcomes the next newcomer.

It starts with the first class

Most women tell us the same thing before joining: "I've never done anything like this." Six months later they're grading for orange belt. The secret isn't talent — it's a beginner stream where nobody gets thrown in with advanced fighters, and partners matched to your size from day one.

How the squad trains

1

Women-only fundamentals, Saturdays

A dedicated weekly session for technique, fitness and questions — no audience, no pressure, all levels together.

2

Mixed sparring with matched partners

From yellow belt up, women spar in the main group with size- and level-matched partners under close supervision.

3

Competition squad for those who want it

Travel, corner coaching and tournament prep for the dozen women currently competing at regional level and above.

Young women karate medalists on the victory podium

"I joined for self-defense and stayed for the squad. Two years later I stood on a national podium — and I bring my daughter to watch."

Beyond the medals

Ask our women what karate changed and few mention trophies. They talk about walking home taller, speaking up at work, and a circle of training partners who became close friends. The podium is lovely — the confidence is the point.
